IN THIS LESSON

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for! This is a whistle-stop tour of things to think about when you’re on set.

Being on set is one of the most exciting parts of the role. Every set will be different and each will bring it’s own set of challenges.

Depending on what kind of producer you are, you might like to be in on the action or busying yourself elsewhere. What matters is that you and your team feel adequately prepared to deal with whatever the film gods throw at you and that you’re using the time to be useful to those around you!

Things to Prepare Ahead of the Shoot:

  • Ensure that everyone has been adequately briefed, call sheets, risk assessments and production schedules have been sent out in advance and everyone knows how to get to the locations.

  • Make sure that you have your own arsenal of bits to hand, including gaffer tape, pens, paper, mini sewing kit (you never know), portable charger, walkie talkies (if necessary), cash, laptop, water and snacks!

  • Check the weather in advance if it’s a chilly outdoor shoot, bring hot water bottles or if it’s a sunny day, bring extra water and sun cream for the cast and crew.

  • Printed out copy of call sheet, production schedule, risk assessment, script (bring 2 copies because I always misplace mine) and a copies of any permits or licenses for locations.

It’s important to have fun, be useful, prep for the next stage and document the process if you can!
